Tristan Pompey | Professional Baseball Player | Miami Marlins Organization

To play alongside my brother was an absolute dream of mine. Representing Canada is already an amazing honor and privilege that I am beyond grateful for, but having your brother there with you makes it all the more special.

Tell us about your journey to becoming a professional baseball player for the Miami Marlins organization, what or who inspired you to pursue baseball as a career?

My journey to becoming a professional baseball player has been remarkable. I grew up in Mississauga, Ontario and played baseball as long as  I can remember.

My journey really took off when I made the U-18 Canadian team and started to turn the heads of a lot of colleges and universities as well as MLB scouts. However, when I committed to the University of Kentucky, I knew it was the place I wanted to call home after high school and it was a life-changing decision that I would not take back for the world.

Playing baseball at the highest collegiate level in the toughest conference and performing well gives me all the drive and hope in the world that I can be a professional baseball player at the highest level.

My parents definitely are the ones I have to thank in my life for my career and for being the man I am today. Without my parents pushing me both athletically and academically, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

How big of an impact did your older brother Dalton Pompey’s baseball career have on your motivation to become a baseball player too? How have you been able to learn from his experiences?

I always wanted to become a baseball player and my brother making it to the major leagues was just proof and evidence that it is possible and attainable to reach your goals. He definitely aided in my confidence to become a baseball player, but I always knew this is what I was meant to do with my life.

In 2019, you and your brother Dalton Pompey were selected for the Canada national baseball team, 2019 Pan American Games qualifier. What was it like to get the opportunity represent your country at these competitions with your older brother?

To play alongside my brother was an absolute dream of mine. Since we are 4 years apart we never got the chance to play together but now that we are both older, playing together is definitely a highlight of my baseball career I will never forget.

Representing Canada is already an amazing honor and privilege that I am beyond grateful for, but having your brother there with you makes it all the more special.

Your baseball season, like many other professional sports, was cut short due to Covid-19. How has your daily routine changed due to the extended off-season and how excited are you to get back on the pitch for training camp in March?

COVID-19 has definitely taken a toll on everyone, that’s without question. My daily routine is now a lot more of self-motivation and self-discipline because it is up to me and only me to get my work in and prepare myself for the next season to come.

I need to be ready for next season that way I am hitting the ground running and not playing catch up with everyone else. I am super excited to get back on the field. It’s like having something you love temporarily taken from you. It sucks, but it makes the return that much more exciting.

What are your top 3 most memorable moments of your baseball career so far?

  1. Playing on Team Canada with my brother.
  2. Getting drafted in the 3rd round to the Miami Marlins.
  3. Being apart of the first Kentucky team to ever make it to a super-regional.

Being apart of a team and accomplishing something no other team at Kentucky has ever been able to do is special.

Stacey Leawood Stacey's Final Thoughts

Tristan Pompey had big shoes to fill courtesy of his older brother and former Toronto Blue Jay, Dalton Pompey. Watching his older brother become a Major League Baseball player gave Tristan the confidence and reassurance he needed to succeed in professional sports, having known all along that he was meant to play baseball. While the Pompey brothers both have impressive resumes, the most impressive part may be that they both had the opportunity to represent Canada TOGETHER on the world stage. Having some extra time to prepare for the upcoming season I can’t wait to see how Tristan makes his mark on the pitch this year.
